Leaves and snow crunched beneath their feet, yet not a paw print was left. Their tail brushed the snow, but not a chill down their spine was felt. It felt... Peaceful, even. Not too hot, but not too cold - like it was supposed to be like this since birth, instead of the frigid cold that they were cursed with. The stars seemed closer than ever, and the scent of fresh prey filled their nose, making their mouth water ever so slightly. They were convinced that they were in paradise...
But, they knew this place. Snailstar had been here before, back when they were receiving their nine lives to lead their clan. They remembered what this place was, so close to the stars and yet swaddled in chills and warmth at the same time. The Star Trail - or, known by the humans and the kittypets - the Northern lights. However it may be for the kittypets and the nonbelievers, to most in the clan, it was a sign that their Starclan was still watching out for them. That their Star Trail promised victory and peaceful rest at the end of it. Of course, all leaders had walked the Star Trail before... But the events that happened within had never, ever been explained to anyone outside of the leaders. It was taboo to do so.
Snailstar came to a halt at last, standing upon the large hill that overlooked the rest of the trail. They breathed deeply, a smile on their face as pride swelled in their chest, in their heart. It was beautiful, seeing the starry cats hunt and play until they were content, and then finish their journey in the Star Trail. Snailstar relaxed, sitting down and rolling their shoulders, letting their muscles relax easily.
That is, until they heard pawsteps behind them. They didn't turn around, however. They knew by the scent who it was.
"Hailingstar." They greeted, smiling as they dipped their head respectfully. "It's been a while, yeah? Heh... I almost thought you went to complete the trail." A deep chuckle rumbled in the throat of the cat. "Ah, no, my apprentice... My successor - I still have to see you through. I wouldn't miss that for the world. But; I've come to tell you something. Something very important, so listen well..."[/b]
"You must go on a journey - a journey to the tunnels, to where my old bones had been laid to rest. I need you to take one warrior with you - only one, and no more. Trust your heart, Snailstar. Trust your instincts for a change, Snailtoes. You'll know what to do when you get there..."
"What?! Wait! Hailingsta--"
Like that, the leader awoke. They jolted awake with a gasp, their emerald eyes wide and their fur bristled up, making them look like a large, poofy cotton ball. Still though, there was no time to waste. They scrambled from their perch in the large tree, racing down the hill and into the camp, frantically looking around for someone to take - anyone to take. There were just too many choices to choose from! What if they picked the wrong one?! What if--
Calm. Snailstar reminded their self. A few deep breaths, slow, in and out, and they were thinking clearly again. Once more, their eyes scanned the clearing...

Night had hit quickly on the sky, replacing the sky blues with indigo darkness. Cats emerged into the warrior's den, sheltering themselves from the cold and to lay down for deep sleep. The cats cuddled against one another for comfort and warmth. The den was practically right under the medicine cat's den and leader's den. Which was memorizing. Eyelids fluttered lightly, baby blue optics the only light that was noticeable regarding the dark figure in the den. The cat was unable to sleep, all she was thinking about was her past life. Ears lowering slightly, the feline released a soft sigh.
Oh, Cinderjay. I miss you so much... Owlscreech thought to herself, frowning at her self thoughts. The death of her mother broke her, and her last words to her were to be the kindest she-cat that she could be. And that is what she will always do, for the sake of her mother's dying wishes. The white and grey she-cat treated her with respect, and with care. While her biological mother was disgusted with her, insulting her and making her feel small. When she had been killed, Owlscreech didn't know how to feel. Sad, happy, or mad. She was just so confused. Her haunting dreams appeared every time she closed her eyes, which is why she refused to let herself sleep. Not as though she felt tired anyway. After a while, the cats surrounding her were fast asleep next to one another, huddling for warmth.
Owlscreech raised herself from her laying posture, exiting herself out of the den, making her way into the empty clearing. The small tabby glanced around to see if there was anyone around, before she was able to embrace a frown on her own time. Sitting next to a stone, she leaned against the cold surface, pressing her cheek against it. There was an empty feeling upon her. Then there were paw steps nearby, making her ears perk in alert. The sight of the ginger and white leader appeared, they seemed to be cautious.
Owlscreech raised herself and rushed over to the leader, worried about them almost immediately. Not too long ago, or so it had seemed, they were already considering themselves as friends, and wanting to get to know her. But Owlscreech had always cared for anyone, but with Snailstar, being their friend, Owlscreech was more than ever worried about them. "Are you okay, Snailstar? What happened?" She had asked the leader, nosing their shoulder for comfort. The tabby rasped her tongue on their shoulder, looking up at the leader with wide eyes.

Snailstar glanced over, their ears flicking once to show that they acknowledged the tabby. The ginger-white leader was silent, however - lost in thought, trying to decide if they should tell the other. Follow my heart, follow my instincts... Hhhh-- but I hardly know Owlscreech! What if it's the wrong choice?! What if it's--... Hhhhh, calm. You gotta... You gotta follow your heart. The Star Trail gave us instincts in our heart, and...
"Owlscreech." They began, taking a deep breath before shaking out their fluffy, long fur. The short, long cat, looked up at the other with those emerald eyes of theirs. There was no smile on their face, no smile to their eyes or lips, but they didn't seem... Unhappy? So, they drew in a deep breath, and held their head up high, along with their tail. Their chest puffed out a bit, and their back straightened, much like they were about to give a ceremony.
"Owlscreech, come with me. The Star Trail has a task for us."

Owlscreech gazed up at Snailstar, confusion striking mostly upon her baby blue optics. What had gotten into the leader? They had been fine when they last spoken just this morning. The tabby feline perked her paper thin ears, one flicking with a sign of alert. When Snailstar announced her name, the tabby grew herself back from flinching from the sudden reaction. It was so weird how the leader was acting. Did she have a bad dream? Or perhaps she remembered something bad.
When they used the name of Star Trail, it grew more of her attention, a smile beaming on her hued lips. Star Trail? A task for them? This was even more better than the time she had caught a bird for the first time, considering the fact that she had a stumped tail and it was hard for her to balance on her paws in the first place, Cats need their tails to balance on thin surroundings.
"Really? Where are we going?" Owlscreech asked, standing next to the orange and white cat.

"We're going... We're going into the tunnels, Owlscreech. We are going to touch noses with the bones of Hailingstar." They announced, a little smile growing on their face. Maybe it was a leader thing, but they quite liked the tunnels. Although the smell was horrid, they found their self being drawn to there often. A sense of security, peace, and protection would wash over them, the further they got into the tunnels. Maybe it had something to do with Hailingstar being laid to rest there.
"Come on. We'll be in and out." Not giving time for protest, they turned and began trotting out of camp and into the snow, fluffing out their fur a bit as they went. After all, it'd be horrible if they froze on the journey there. But, they didn't pay attention to anything else at the moment; only the path in front of them.
"Sorry to spring this on you, Owlscreech..." They paused, a little chuckle coming to them. "Owl-bet you didn't expect it!"

With all due to respect, Owlscreech didn't like the tunnels too much. There had been too many cat corpses there, and the smell was rotting and horrific. The thought of the smell was causing her nose to crunch up. Even maybe the bodies will cause a chill to go down her spine. But, the leader did mention Hailingstar. The first leader ever of HailingClan. So that got her a bit of motivation to go into the tunnels with Snailstar. It would be exciting to be near the presence of where Hailingstar laid to a peaceful rest.
Following Snailstar close behind, Owlscreech was trying to catch up, even though her paws were small and forelegs are short, which matched her body figure. Great Star Trail the leader was in a rush, and she had a feeling she was going to become tired way too soon. Catching up by slightly running beside the leader, Owlscreech looked over at Snailstar. The brown tabby was concerned for the leader, and she considered them as a friend, so of course she cared more than anything.
"No need to apologize, Snailstar. I'm honored that you chose me to come on this journey with you. I wouldn't miss it for anything." She meowed, bringing herself closer to her friend with a soft and graceful smile on her lovely hued lips. "I didn't expect it at all, Slow Poke." She chuckled, winking playfully.

Snailstar smiled gentle at the playful name, and a chuckle escaped their rubbery lips. "You really are too kind to me, Owlscreech." They said, shaking their head for a moment or two. Their short legs struggled through the snow, but didn't slow them down at all - they were properly used to this type of terrain by now.
Soon, they would reach a much smaller hill with a tunnel entrance carved into the base of it, where the snow wouldn't fill it on a good day. It seemed like today was a good day, and that the Star Trail was smiling down upon the two Hailingclan cats as well. So, without a moment of hesitation, the long leader plunged their way into the tunnels, carefully maneuvering around the snow banks that had yet to melt. The scent was overpowering, but they remembered it well enough to ignore it.
"...Owlscreech, take the lead. I'll follow up the rear - don't worry, I'll be right behind you. Just lead us to Hailingstar's remains. I know you can find it."

Owlscreech followed Snailstar without hesitation into the much smaller tunnel, the darkness over crept their view. But their vision were far more better than any other animal, or so Owlscreech believed. Her paws stabbed on pebbles and soil that hadn't seemed to become solid quite yet due to the cold weather of leaf-bare arising. Squinting her baby blue eyes in the dark, she was able to see the pathway, and though the smell was absolutely stomach-churning in a way, the tabby learned to ignore the smell and continue only on their main course -- to find their clan's first leader's remains and for Snailstar to have contact with it. Owlscreech wondered what Hailingstar had planned for Snailstar. Perhaps a prophecy?
The mackerel tabby exchanged a quick glance with her leader, nodding slowly. "Alright, stay close though." Owlscreech murmured, hearing her own voice echo through the dark abyss.
She made her way forward, relying on her paws, whiskers, and nose mostly through the dark. Tasting the air made her nearly hurl, but she tried to focus on her main goal. Taking a moment, she tried to concentrate on that goal, praying for herself to not disappoint her leader, and to know the way. It then drew her attention of where the remains could be. Far deep in the tunnel.
"I think I know where it is." Owlscreech meowed, leading the way straight into the tunnel.
The further they went, the more the air seemed to be hard to breathe in. But, the tabby assumed it was only because of her weak posture. The tunnels shrink, and Owlscreech crawled her way through a gap hole, which led into the large open space, with bones that piled up as the moon's light hit upon it. Hailingstar's bones. Owlscreech thought to herself, moving a bit from the entrance so that Snailstar could come through.
"We're here, Snailstar." She murmured softly.

Snailstar approached quietly, their head and tail held high, and their chest puffed out just a bit. They took a deep breath, moving past Owlscreech and heading straight towards the bones... Only, they stopped short. Their mind told them to go ahead and touch noses with the pile of old bones, while their heart and instincts - they told a different story. Trust your instincts, Snailtoes... With a small sigh, they stepped back and towards the entrance again, nudging Owlscreech forward instead.
"Owlscreech, this is for you." They announced, trying to ignore their mind screaming at them, and instead go with their gut... But, those bones were sacred. They were treasured, and sought after by Hailingclan high ranks. It felt... Wrong, to just let a warrior touch noses with them! ...On the other paw, with their instincts, it felt perfectly right to allow Owlscreech to touch noses with the bones. So, they shook their head, and offered a kind smile.
"Touch noses with Hailingstar's bones. This is your prophecy, not mine."

It all seemed to go just as planned, where Snailstar could touch their nose with the bones of Hailingstar. It was what they was brought here to do. Watching closely, Owlscreech seen that they paused for a moment, causing Owlscreech who was sitting to stand up and approach the orange and white feline. What seemed to be the problem? Were these the wrong bones? Although, being nudged gently by her leader and hearing their words string through their eardrums, Owlscreech's eyes widened.
"But, Snailstar-" Owlscreech paused. These bones were for high ranks. Not for warriors.
"These bones are not supposed to be touched by the nose of a warrior..." Owlscreech murmured.
But then they spoken of how this prophecy was hers. Her mind screamed for her to do it, her heart also told her to do it. And she wanted to touch the bones of her previous leader more than anything. Hesitantly, the tabby then approached the pile of bones. They were a little bit covered in dust, but other than that, they were white and not rotten like most bones piled up in these tunnels. Looking over her shoulder, she glanced at Snailstar for reassurance that this was okay. And then, she lowered her body to press against the not too cold and not too warm ground, compressing the ground beneath her. Leaning forward, the she-cat pressed her nose against the cold bones, immediately feeling loopy and her eyes feeling like weights upon them. Soon, her vision was black.
There was no longer any feeling of wind, just the feeling of... snow? Lifting her eyelids, the tabby found herself laying in snow. This caught her by surprise. Raising herself from the ground, she shook the snow that was attacked to her thick pelt, the snow spraying off her. Looking around, where was in a wide land space covered in snow. It was definitely night, and looking up, where the wonderful colours of the Star Trail.
Mouth gaping, Owlscreech walked toward a hill, where it seemed to reach directly to the trail. Though she wanted to run up, her instincts told her to remain calm and to approach it slowly. It was a big hill, but she did make it. The lights were now much closer to her, where she was nearly able to touch her paw on it. Would it feel like anything? Maybe like water since it waved slowly like the lapping shores of a lake on land. It was absolutely memorizing. Her large baby blue orbs reflected on the lights, that waved slowly in a rhythm, and the stars seeping through.

"Welcome, Owlscreech." A voice rang out from behind the warrior, followed by a soft chuckle. There, the old cat stood, his chin and tail up proudly. His eyes reflected a dimmed version of the stars, and his pelt was almost see-through at this point, yet he kept his grip to the world strong. He would rest and finish the Star Trail when he knew his clan was in safe paws... Hailingstar, after all, saw this ceremony as the most important. He, himself, had been the medicine cat of Frostclan, a long, long time ago. He had been known as Hailingfeathers, and healing his clan had been his singular goal in life... Now, he was leading his clan from the stars.
"It's a pleasure to formally meet you. I am Hailingstar, or... Hailingfeathers, to those who remember me as such." He said, dipping his head in a sign of respect to the warrior. Huh. How odd of him, showing respect to a simple warrior... Or, more so, others would've thought it was quite odd. But, he kept a smile on his face, and laughter on his rubbery lips. He trotted forward a bit more, closing the gap between them.
"You have quite the destiny in front of you, Owlscreech. Snailstar has picked well - for you, my friend, are to do what I used to do, back in Frostclan. You will learn how to take care of your clanmates, and nurse them to health. You will learn to show compassion to all, even those who don't deserve it. You will learn how to help bring cubs into this world, and will care for the elderly who are leaving this world to join us here, in the Star Trail." [/b]
"You are to be the next medicine cat."

Though the sight of the northern lights were incredible, a sudden voice sound from near her. It alert her and caused her to look over her shoulder, seeing the slight see through figure of a cat approach her slowly. Owlscreech look a moment to realize who it was and when she did, she gasped in shock. The tabby kneel to her forelegs to show her greatest respect to him. "Hailingstar, it's a great honor to finally meet you." Owlscreech meowed, raising herself to her paws, the cat was obviously bigger than her which caused her to look up at him, smiling with excitement and grace as her eyes danced in joy.
"Pleasure is all mine, Hailingstar." Owlscreech recalled, watching him dip his head to her. How odd, for a cat with a great destiny in the past as his legacy still withholds from this day, dipping his head to a regular warrior such as herself. Snailstar did tell her for some reason that this was her prophecy. Which confused Owlscreech greatly. But she trusted her leader more than anything, so she remained quiet for the deceased leader to proceed what he had planned for her.
Hearing every word slip out from the cat's maw, Owlscreech's eyes widen with quite interest. That was right, Hailingstar was once FrostClan's medicine cat. But Owlscreech? Become a medicine cat? Was this her path to take? Owlscreech looked back to when she saw cats sick or injured. She hated it. She wanted to do something about it. She also hated hurting others. She was speechless, due to all the responsibility she had now.
But, she dipped her head in complete respect. "I'll continue your legacy as being HailingClan's medicine cat, Hailingstar. I'll keep your promise and won't let you down." Owlscreech meowed, raising her cranium to meet the lifeless eyes of the deceased feline. "It would be an honor to serve HailingClan as their medicine cat, and to be able to heal those in pain instead of being the one to cause it."

"Thank you, Owlscreech. Thank you so, so much. You have no idea how much this helps me... For now, I'm one step closer to finishing the Star Trail on my own. To see my clan with someone to bring life to them... It's beautiful, my friend. I don't believe Snailstar could've picked anyone more qualified than you. You're going to be wonderful, Owlscreech." [/b] Hailingstar purred, padding forward to press his nose against hers, a smile still on his lips.
"Now... You are the first medicine cat in the clans, since the last era - the era of war and strife. My era, Froststar's era, and Howlingmask's era. You are my legacy. You are who I'm placing my complete and utter trust in - and I hope that trust is well placed..." [/b] Hailingstar chuckled lightly, shaking his head. He took a step back, continuing to smile lightly at her. Pride smoldered in his eyes and swelled in his chest.
"Now... Wake up. Wake up, Owlscreech, for there is much for you to do."

Owlscreech smiled and leaned forward to accept the interaction between Hailingstar, as he pressed his nose against her forehead, radiating the warmth to her chest, smiling gently. It was her honor to serve and help her clan alongside with Snailstar and Nutmegsnout. And of course it was for the clan but especially for Hailingstar. Flattening her ears at his words, she raised her cranium once he pulled away, smiling up at the tom.
"Thank you. Your words mean everything to me." Owlscreech murmured.
Wow, she was going to be the first medicine cat in the clans. In this new era. Meaning a lot relied on her now. Pressing her nose against the tom's shoulder - surprised that she didn't go straight through the deceased spirit cat as he looked see through, showing her greatest respect for the feline. "I will not let you down." She meowed softly, opening her eyes to see everything fading away. And soon darkness took over her vision once again.
Her laying posture seemed to be very peaceful, her sides heaving up and down in a rhythm of her breathing. Lifting her eyelids slowly, she raised her cranium up to see that she was back in the tunnel, laying next to Hailingstar's remaining bones. Looking up, the moon was still up, but the sky was slowly changing into a whole new color. The indigo blue was changing into a lighter colour and the stars were all gone. Looking forward, she saw Snailstar, and she raised to her paws to approach them.
"I saw Hailingstar, Snailstar. And... he said I am destined to be HailingClan's new and first medicine cat." Owlscreech meowed, smiling up at them.

Snailstar had been waiting patiently... Well, not so much patiently. They had been fidgeting around, messing with the cold ground - heck, they had even used the wall of the cave as a scratching post at some point. Man, this had been one boring, booooring quest... That is, until they saw Owlscreech starting to wake up. Excitedly, Snailstar regained their composure, and trotted on over, nosing the other to their paws to help out a bit. They stared at her expectantly, a large smile on their face...
A smile that only grew into a laugh of joy, that is! "Really?! That's amazing, Owlscreech! That's amazing!" They exclaimed, purring loudly as they closed the gap between the two, nuzzling their nose into the other's fur.
"You're gonna be great, Owlscreech!"
